Doctors at Fortis Escorts Faridabad Safely Remove ₹10 Coin Lodged in 12‑Year‑Old’s Food Pipe

Faridabad, 03 October 2025: A 12‑year‑old child was rushed to the emergency department at Fortis Escorts Faridabad after accidentally swallowing a ₹ 10 coin. The coin, measuring nearly 27 mms in diameter, was lodged in the upper esophagus and was causing intense chest pain and difficulty swallowing. An X‑ray confirmed its presence in the food pipe. Led by Dr. Nirdesh Chauhan, Consultant – Gastroenterologist, Fortis Escorts Faridabad, the medical team opted for an urgent endoscopy to prevent life-threatening complications that could arise from delays, such as esophageal tears, infection, or breathing difficulties. Using specialized endoscopic tools, the medical team successfully removed the coin within an hour of the child’s arrival. The extraction itself took about 15 minutes, after which the child was discharged safely later that evening. Follow‑up inspection confirmed there was no damage caused to the esophagus.

Elaborating on the case, Dr. Nirdesh Chauhan said “Coins are among the most frequently swallowed foreign objects in children. While smaller items may sometimes pass on their own, objects like coins lodged in the esophagus can be extremely dangerous. In this instance, prompt medical attention enabled us to prevent serious complications such as ulceration, infection, or airway obstruction. Parents should avoid home remedies like forced vomiting or feeding the child in hope of pushing the object down the food pipe, these may worsen the situation. The safest course is to seek immediate hospital care.”

Rare Surgical Milestone: 32 Loose Bodies Weighing 250 gms removed during Total Knee Replacement Surgery for a 65-Year-Old Woman

The combined weight of the loose bodies constituted a total of 250 gms, largest measuring approximately 4 cms in size, wherein some of the loose bodies were almost the size of walnut-

New Delhi, September 2025: In a remarkable surgical feat, Doctors at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh successfully performed a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery on a 65-year-old woman while simultaneously removing 32 intra-articular loose bodies weighing a total of 250 grams – a combination rarely documented in global orthopedic practice. The complex surgery was led by Dr. (Prof.) Amite Pankaj Aggarwal, Principal Director and Head of Department at the Fortis Bone and Joint Institute, Fortis Shalimar Bagh and the patient was discharged in a stable condition within 6 days.

The patient had been suffering from progressively worsening knee pain and joint deformity for several years. Performing basic activities had become near impossible for her due to the severe stiffness and instability in the joint. Upon admission at Fortis Shalimar Bagh, pre-operative X-rays revealed widespread calcified loose bodies filling the joint. Intra-operative images confirmed 32 lumpy growths, some nearly 4 cm in size, with the combined specimen weighing an unprecedented 250 grams. This condition was identified as secondary synovial chondromatosis – a rare disorder in which cartilage nodules form inside the joint due to an earlier issue, progressively restricting movement and damaging the joint.All loose bodies were removed before the knee replacement, ensuring successful reconstruction. The sheer volume, 32 bodies weighing 250 grams, marks this as an exceptionally rare occurrence in medical literature.

Giving details of the case, Dr. (Prof.) Amite Pankaj Aggarwal, Principal Director and Head of Department at the Fortis Bone and Joint Institute, Shalimar Bagh said, “This was an extremely advanced and rare reported case. The joint cavity was packed with 32 loose bodies, some nearly the size of walnuts. The total weights exceeding 250 grams is very rare and combined with a complex reconstruction makes it even rarer. Performing a knee replacement in such a compromised joint required meticulous planning and advanced surgical techniques. The patient responded well with early mobilization and reported substantial pain relief and improved joint mobility within days. Post-operative physiotherapy is ongoing, leading to good recovery. Cases like these are rare not just in number or weight, but in the surgical challenges they pose. However, we were able to restore the total joint function with significant improvement in the quality of life for the patient who had been suffering for years and that’s the real happiness for a doctor”

गुरुग्राम, 12 सितंबर, 2025: फोर्टिस मेमोरियल रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट (एफएमआरआई), गुरुग्राम द्वारा आयोजित राष्ट्रीय नेत्रदान पखवाड़ा (25 अगस्त – 8 सितंबर) के दौरान 500 से अधिक लोगों ने नेत्रदान करने का संकल्प लिया है। इस कैम्पेन के दौरान, अन्य वर्षों की तुलना में नेत्रदान का संकल्प करने वाले लोगों की संख्या में वृद्धि दर्ज की गई है, जो कॉर्नियल अंधता के बारे में लोगों के स्तर पर बढ़ती जागरूकता और आम जनता की इसमें प्रतिभागिता का सूचक है।

डॉ पारुल शर्मा, प्रिंसीपल डायरेक्टर एंड एचओडी, फोर्टिस आइ इंस्टीट्यूट ने कहा, “नेशनल प्रोग्राम फॉर कंट्रोल ऑफ ब्लाइंडनेस (एनपीसीबी) के अनुसार, देश में करीब 11 लाख कॉर्नियल अंधता के शिकार लोग हैं और हर साल लगभग 25,000 नए मामले इन आंकड़ों में जुड़ जाते हैं। इस विषय में, जनता की भागीदारी को प्रोत्साहित कर मांग और आपूर्ति के अंतर को पाटा जा सकता है। इसके लिए लोगों को नेत्रदान जैसे परोपकारी प्रयास के लिए अपना सहयोग देने की आवश्यकता है। मल्टी-सुपर स्पेश्यलिटी हॉस्पीटल और टर्शियरी रेफरल सेंटर के तौर पर एफएमआरआई इस मिशन को आगे बढ़ाने तथा अपने हॉस्पीटल कार्निया रिट्रिवल प्रोग्राम को बढ़ावा देने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है।”

उन्होंने बताया कि नेत्रदान को विस्तार देने के काम में जुटे डॉक्टरों के सामने कई प्रकार की चुनौतियां पेश आती हैं। उन्हें इस बारे में फैली भ्रांतियों को दूर करने के साथ-साथ इस बारे में समाज में व्याप्त गलत धारणाओं से निपटना पड़ता है और कई बार किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा नेत्रदान के संकल्प की स्वीकृति देने के बावजूद, मृत्यु होने पर उनके परिजनों की ओर से नेत्रदान के लिए स्पष्ट रूप से इंकार कर दिया जाता है। इसके अलावा, कई तरह के सांस्कृतिक और धार्मिक कारण भी अड़चन पैदा करते हैं। कई बार मृत्यु होने के बाद कार्निया रिट्रिवल के लिए उपलब्ध छह घंटे की सीमित अवधि के भीतर आइ बैंकों को सूचित करने में देरी, अस्पतालों में प्रशिक्षित काउंसलर्स तथा आवश्यक इंफ्रास्ट्रक्चर की कमी भी इसमें बाधा बनती है।

Light and Life – A Quiet Poetry of Light Concludes with Resounding Success

New Delhi, September 11 – The Delhi Photography Club’s members’ exhibition, “Light and Life: A Quiet Poetry of Light”, concluded yesterday at the Open Palm Court Gallery, India Habitat Centre, affirming the quiet yet powerful role of the arts in fostering cultural dialogue and people-to-people connections. Held from September 6 to 9, the exhibition transcended a conventional showcase, positioning photography as both an artistic pursuit and a medium of soft power diplomacy.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Padma Bhushan awardee Shri Rajiv Sethi, India’s eminent art and design curator, whose presence underscored the cultural significance of the initiative.
